 Maritime Archaeology Workshops 2012

Esteemed archaeologist, Michael Gibbons will conduct complementary Maritime Archaeology workshops with our boat divers on specific dates during 2012. Michael is one of Ireland's foremost field archaeologists and tour guides. He has worked extensively on digs in Ireland and abroad; and lectured on both sides of the Atlantic and in Australia.

What do these unique one day trips involve?        Diver exits a beehive hut on High Island

Divers will be brought to local, historic sites of interest; including Bronze Age relics, famine villages and pre-christian sites.  These historic landmarks are on the islands you know and love for diving; including Inis Deigil, Inis Barna, Crump Island, and some you have not seen yet! Caher Island and High Island.  You will be placed ashore these islands, where Michael will deliver an interactive field trip of the historic treasures contained within. Following each field trip, a dive will take place on a nearby underwater site. This is an opportunity to open your mind to the wonders and secrets of our stunning coastline, plus avail of some excellent diving.

Two boat dives will take place on the day with the surface interval between the dives spent exporing the island with Michael.

Departure at 10am from the dive centre.

(High Island trip departure at 10am from Cleggan pier)

The field trip location and dive sites chosen on the day will depend on the weather.

Confirmed dates so far,  and the proposed Archaeological sites on those dates are:

May: Saturday 12th. Caher Island (new for 2012)

June: Saturday 16th. High Island (not visited by us since 2010)

November: Saturday 4th. Choice of Crump Island / Inisdeigl / Inishbarna depending on weather.
